Chez
Mama San (Washington DC)
We’ve really taken to Chez Mama San’s light yet hearty
blend of Western and Japanese cuisines. Rather than sit in the
first floor dining area, ask the hostess to take you up the hidden
oak staircase to the more quaint and romantic upper dining room.
The sheer lilac-colored silk curtains at the window tables make
those our favorites. Mama San’s Meatloaf or Beef Curry will
satisfy anyone’s appetite as a main course, or order a few
small plates to try a variety. For desert, the Mocha Ice Cream
or the Soy Cheesecake are our favorites.
Bangkok 54 (Arlington,
VA)
Much less strenuous than Yoga, Bangkok 54 takes us to our "happy
place," a hidden garden in tropical Thailand. A hostess in
a Thai silk sari greets you, as the sound of flowing water, soft
Thai music and the fragrance of Basil, Ginger and Pepper envelope
you. Earth toned walls seem decorated by a tropical tribe, with
wood carvings, vases and goddess statues. Very Thai, but very modern.
Fresh ingredients come from the long-standing Thai grocery next
door
– same owners! Bangkok 54 is one of the few area Thai restaurants
not afraid of being too authentic. They use ingredients that are
true to the dishes. For example, you’ll find Thai eggplants
and green tomatoes instead of American ones. It makes big difference
in the taste.
We really love everything on the menu. Of special note are the
Spicy Eggplant with Pork, Eggplant tossed with Chili and Sweet
Basil (in black bean sauce), Spicy Roasted Tofu with Basil, and
Crispy Roasted Tofu (sautéed with fresh chili peppers, garlic
and fresh basil leaves). By the way, Thai tofu is a very different
than that from other Asian regions. Not soft and bland, it’s
crispy on the outside, and flavorful on the inside. We also find
the Green Tea Ice Tea; very refreshing and a great way to clean
your palette.
